Trichiasis Treatment
When lashes grow towards the eye and result in irritation, it is a condition called trichiasis. Trichiasis can result from trauma or surgery to the eyelids, chronic inflammatory conditions of the eyelids (such as blepharitis, rosacea), infections of the eyelids, and rarely cancer of the eyelids. Patients typically experience intermittent or constant eye irritation and can have recurrent corneal abrasions (scratches) and even corneal ulcers (infections). The vision is often compromised because of the repetitive irritation of the eye. Lashes can be pulled out in the office but typically grow back within 6-8 weeks. A more permanent treatment involved delicately and precisely destroying the responsible lash follicle so that it no longer produces a hair. This procedure, referred to as electro epilation, is done in the office under a microscope and with a tiny needle that conducts energy. The procedure is done under ltopical and ocal anesthesia and takes just a few minutes. Several treatment sessions are often required to successfully treat all of the follicles. In some severe cases, trichiasis may need to be treated with eyelid surgery.
